Glossary of terms
Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation System (AKIS)
the collection of all people and organisations (together with associated processes and regulations) that generate, share and use knowledge and innovation for agriculture, forestry and rural development.
Back-Office/ Front-Office
in farm advisory services, the ‘front-office’ is where professional relationships between farmers and advisors are developed and implemented. The ‘back-office’ is where evidence and knowledge are accumulated and up-dated (e.g. training and networking of advisors, research and development).
Farm advisory services
the set of organisations that enable farmers to develop farm-level solutions, enhance skills and co-create new knowledge with advisors. These organisations often combine front- and back-office activities and include traditional advice providers (chambers of agriculture, public bodies, etc.), farmer-based organisations (unions, associations, cooperatives, etc.), independent consultants, NGOs, commercial providers of technical products and services etc.
Farmer
a producer of agricultural commodities. The term includes the full range of farm sizes and types, as well as members of a farming family, farm managers and farm employees.
Governance
the markets, policies, regulations, networks and social norms that produce and enforce the rules for activities in any specified context.
Horizon 2020 (H2020)
the research programme and innovation programme of the European Union for the period of 2014-2020.
Innovation
the implementation of a new or significantly improved product (good or service) or process. Innovation activities are all scientific, technological, organisational, financial and commercial activities which contribute to the creation, adoption and use of innovations.
Innovation areas
the eight specific types of innovation selected for study in the AgriLink project.
